Howard Tenens Logistics x Calor BioLPG: Decarbonising Logistics Today

In a bold step toward decarbonising its operations, Howard Tenens Logistics has become Calor’s first logistics customer to transition all Calor-supplied sites to 100% BioLPG. This case study highlights how the partnership enabled a seamless shift to renewable fuel, supporting Tenens’ sustainability strategy while maintaining operational excellence — and setting a new standard for the logistics sector.

Pioneering a Sustainable Future

About Howard Tenens Logistics

Founded in 1953, Howard Tenens has evolved from a packaging and manufacturing business into one of the UK’s largest privately owned logistics companies. With 23 locations, over 4.7 million sq. ft of warehousing space, and a fleet of more than 200 vehicles, the company is known for being Connected, Supportive, Progressive, and Resilient. Its success is built on long-term partnerships, tailored logistics solutions, and a forward-thinking approach to innovation and sustainability.

Tackling the Carbon Challenge

The logistics sector is under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining efficient operations. Forklift trucks (FLTs), a backbone of warehouse activity, traditionally run on diesel or LPG—both of which emit greenhouse gases. While switching from diesel to LPG can reduce emissions by up to 22%¹, Tenens was ready to go a step further to a fully sustainable solution.

The BioLPG Breakthrough

As a long-term energy partner, Calor proposed switching to its BioLPG tariff, which guaranteed a seamless transition that aligned with Tenens’ sustainability objectives.
Jason Ferrie, Calor Sales Professional, explains:

“Tenens now uses 6 x 2000-litre FLT liquid off-take tanks across four bulk sites, supported by electric liquid pumps and nozzles for safe and efficient cylinder filling. This setup consumes around 11 tonnes of 100% BioLPG annually. An additional site uses 18kg cylinders for FLTs, accounting for a further 25 tonnes.”

Previously running on a 40% BioLPG blend, Tenens upgraded to 100% renewable fuel — becoming Calor’s first logistics customer to do so.

No Disruption, Just Progress

Because BioLPG is chemically identical to standard LPG and distributed through a mass balance method², the transition was effortless. Tenens’ existing equipment continued to run without a hitch. Calor’s smart auto-ordering system ensured uninterrupted supply—essential in a time-critical industry where any delay can be costly.

Driving Carbon Savings and Strategic Impact

Anna Rickard, Environmental Manager at Howard Tenens:

“We began looking at BioLPG about three years ago. It was immediately appealing due to its carbon savings and compatibility with our existing FLT systems. Our short- to medium-term focus is increasing biofuel use, while longer term, we aim to electrify equipment powered by our own solar PV.”

This phased approach allows the company to achieve immediate carbon reductions while preparing for future electrification. Anna continues:

“When the contract came up for renewal, returning to standard LPG wasn’t an option – it would increase our footprint. Switching to 100% BioLPG aligned perfectly with our strategy and also meant that 100% of our customer operations would be run solely on renewable energy and fuels at the six sites that we own and operate.”

BioLPG also has the benefit of quick refuelling, allowing forklift trucks to run up to 3 times longer than the electric alternatives, as there isn’t a significant downtime for battery recharge. The switch to 100% BioLPG forms part of a phased carbon reduction plan that includes on-site solar PV, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and biomethane trucks.

Why Calor? A Partnership That Delivers

For Tenens, selecting an energy supplier is about more than price — it’s about shared values, transparency, and long-term reliability.

“Calor ticks all those boxes,” says Anna. “We’ve had a brilliant experience, especially working with Jason, who’s always responsive and proactive. We value partnerships with providers who share our values and work collaboratively to meet joint goals.”

A Logistics Industry First

Howard Tenens is proud to be the first logistics company to run entirely on Calor-supplied 100% BioLPG. It is also one of the earliest signatories of Logistics UK’s Route to Net Zero pledge, demonstrating leadership in building a cleaner, more resilient logistics sector.

“BioLPG helped us take a critical step towards Net Zero without any operational disruption,” says Anna. “It’s a practical solution with immediate impact.”

Conclusion: A Blueprint for Sustainable Logistics

The success of Howard Tenens’ BioLPG transition proves that logistics companies don’t need to wait for a carbon-neutral future—they can start building it today. With the right partners and practical, renewable solutions like BioLPG, the journey to Net Zero is not just possible—it’s already happening.

2Through a method called mass balancing, we ensure that for each Kg of LPG fuel you purchase from Calor an equal amount of renewable BioLPG energy is purchased and distributed amongst our customers in its place. By opting for a BioLPG tariff, you’re buying into a more sustainable future and contributing to reducing the carbon emissions from the use of LPG.
