Describe your project
Umberleigh is a rural village in North Devon containing a small primary school with approximately 50 pupils. The school has recently acquired a parcel of land directly in front of its current site and are planning on creating community play areas for both children and adults from the local area together with parking for up to a dozen vehicles away from a busy main road. Funding would be used to purchase and install outdoor gym and play equipment on the new site which will enable all ages to come together to enjoy the outdoor is a safe environment whilst keeping fit at the same time. Phase 2 of the project would include activity boards with exercise suggestions being placed around the site together with picnic benches to enable people to enjoy the area which will include sections of wildflower planting.
How will your project benefit your local community?
There is currently no outdoor play area in the village, or surrounding area, and limited off road safe space for parents, grandparents and carers to take children where they can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Having an element of adult equipment mixed with the children's equipment will encourage all ages to maintain their health with adults acting as good role models for children by demonstrating their own desires to keep fit. Current public statistics, 2011 census, show that the population in Umberleigh has an above average percentage of people with 'very bad' health which needs to be addressed.
Please give details of any support you have from your local community
The local community are fully supportive of the plans and have already raised fund via a Panto at the beginning of the year to help kick start the project.
How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
Umberleigh has a population of just over 800 of which more than 100 are children under the age of 16 years old. Our project will benefit the whole population by providing suitable outdoor play and gym equipment for all. North Devon is not an affluent area and this project will enable to community to exercise and keep fit without the cost of travel, expensive gym membership or needing to purchase equipment.
Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
The money will be used to purchase and install a range of outdoor gym and play equipment suitable for all ages to use on a newly acquired parcel of land to the front of the school site. The area will be appropriately surfaced to facilitate all year round use of the equipment and the car park and new track will ensure ease of access and safe off road parking for vehicles. A further phase to the development will include the addition of picnic benches and wildflower planting in the recreational area.
When and why was your project founded?
Project was founded in 2017 when the first approach was made to the local farmer to purchase a parcel of land.
