Project description

Describe your project
In 2018, Stockland Community Pub Ltd (SCPL) raised £278,051 from individual members of the local community. The purpose was to purchase the freehold of The Kings Arms, which has been closed for 6 years, and to run it as a community-owned pub, for the benefit of the local community. The purchase is now complete and we need to refurbish the pub ready for opening. While it was closed, there was a flood in the kitchen, damaging catering equipment. This project will see that equipment repaired and refurbished or replaced ready for opening.

How will your project benefit your local community?
Once it is re-opened, the community-owned pub will be a free house that serves local and guest beers and sensibly priced, freshly cooked, good food prepared using locally sourced ingredients. It will be the heart of the village as a place for social gathering, cultural activities, somewhere to meet people and exchange information, and it will promote a cohesive and friendly community in the area. Profits will be invested back into the pub, developing new facilities and services for the community.

Please give details of any support you have from your local community
As well as the funds invested by the community to purchase the pub, local volunteers are active in maintaining the pub garden, clearing rubbish from and cleaning the inside of the building, ready for opening.

How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
The parish of Stockland has around 1000 residents. Potentially, all of these, plus members of the wider community, could benefit from having a local pub, providing employment and serving good, local produce.

Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
While the pub was closed, no maintenance work was performed, nor was adequate heating left on inside the building. This resulted in a number of internal leaks in the roof space which consequently damaged various rooms including the pub kitchen. This project is to refurbish the kitchen and replace the damaged range cooker.

When and why was your project founded?
Stockland Community Pub Limited was formed as a Community Benefit Society, in 2013. The purpose was to purchase the freehold of The Kings Arms Inn, which has been closed for 6 years. We need to refurbish the kitchen in order to get the pub open to the public.
