Describe your project
The St. Germans Charitable Trust was set up to provide general charitable support for the village of St. Germans. Over the past four years its sole focus has been on the restoration of the Recreation Ground ‘The Rec’ in the village. This site was formerly the school playing pitch, but was abandoned in 1996 when a new school was built. In 2014 a group of volunteers from the village started to cut back twenty years of growth. Over the last four years we have created a football pitch, a woodland area, shelter and picnic benches.
How will your project benefit your local community?
The village of St. Germans does not have a communal green space. The Rec is designed to be a space that can be used for all as a place for exercise, relaxation and play. It is open to all and in addition is being used by the village for the May Tree fair and by youth groups for organised events such as camping and outdoor activities.
Please give details of any support you have from your local community
The Parish Council have provided funding and many local volunteers have been involved in cutting, clearing and maintenance of the site.
How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
We are a small village of approximately 1500 people
Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
Creation of a small wildflower area, signage to help ensure the site is used safely, tree surgery to ensure that the site is safe and establishing a green gym initiative to encourage a greater number of participants
