Describe your project
The Outdoor Adventure Trim trail is a playground project to provide school pupils with a place to play and exercise safely. It will be a single trim trail installation made from natural wood and is designed to encourage children to play together and to increase their own skills, abilities and to use their imaginations. The school here on the island has been closed for over a year when there were no children of first school age living here. The outdoor area is spartan and unimaginative and needs an overhaul. Now that the school has reopened, the time has come to upgrade the facilities in order to offer the children a range of equipment in the form of an adventure trim trail. This will encourage the development of gross motor skills, and, along with building up resilience and fitness, it will be fun!
How will your project benefit your local community?
It will enable the children to play safely as the old equipment is unsightly, becoming rotten and unsafe and is being removed. The children who live on the island have no access to any other play areas as there is not a playground anywhere on the island. The benefits for the community are huge both directly for the pupils and for the wider school as we are using active learning to inspire others from pupils to parents and the wider community. The play area will also be more pleasing to look out upon for the residents whose homes overlook the field. The trim trail we would like to use will be designed to appeal to and be suitable for children from Nursery age up to Year 4 so will be used by our whole school community.
Please give details of any support you have from your local community
The parish council has pledged £2000 in funding following a vote by island residents with the playground proposal coming top of the poll of preferences for funding. Our school is supporting the wider project by resurfacing the playground with 100% recycled bonded rubber mulch and adding a sand play area and mud kitchen.
How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
The federation has 28 pupils and the playing field is used for events like Sports day, nature education and play when the pupils from the mainland come to the island. The island community of 125 residents will also benefit.
Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
We would like to buy a trim trail for our outdoor area. We are looking for a natural hardwood and softwood trail which will be positioned on our school field. The trail can have various parts added depending upon the amount of funding we receive. For example, a trail of 8 units would cost around £4000 and this would include sections of climbing wall, rope bridge, stepping blocks, foot swings, monkey bars and criss-cross ropes. There will be installation charges to add to this amount.
When and why was your project founded?
It is a new project - the island's school is a unique place governed by the tides and has recently reopened as the island now has two new pupils. We began the project in January when we received quotes for the resurfacing of the playground.
