Project description

Describe your project
Castlethorpe Sports Ground was created nearly 20 years ago paid for by 'planning gain' realised from the building of a number of new houses at two locations in the village. It is a great facility for the village. For many years the football part of the ground was used by a local Saturday and Sunday team, then by 'veterans' teams and more recently by children's teams. The parking area currently only really allows for at most two games to be played concurrently. As the children's matches are played across the width of the pitch it is possible to play three games at once. The only thing that prevents this happening without having to park outside the sports ground and thus annoying the neighbours is the amount of parking available. This project aims to significantly increase the amount of parking space in the ground.

How will your project benefit your local community?
Castlethorpe FC are a successful children’s football team that play in the Milton Keynes league that boast 5 age groups currently for boys and girls from ages 7 to 13. They are one of the few teams in the area that have an all-girls team at Under 13’s level. The 5 age groups that they currently facilitate offer local football to boys and girls in the area, providing skills, fitness and teamwork to aid their development in sport and their future life. Similarly the cricket facilities provide for a local Saturday and Sunday league team, the former playing in the South Northants league and the latter playing friendlies against local teams and giving younger and newer local players the opportunity to take part. The tennis courts are well used and the parish council aims to put up basketball nets at the request of the Youth Club. Additionally the parish council is installing outdoor gym equipment at the ground to encourage further participation in sport. The thing that is now holding back expansion in these areas is the amount of parking available. Additional hard standing car park facilities would provide numerous benefits including: • Removing the problem of parking in nearby residential streets • A safe environment for parents to park and allow their children to make their way safely to/from the playing pitches • Benefiting the local community when other local events are held at the playing fields.

Please give details of any support you have from your local community
The football, cricket, tennis clubs and the physical fitness activity groups (Zumba, and two fitness training) are all fully in support in extending the use of the sports ground, indeed the requirement comes from the first two of these groups. The parish council are fully behind the scheme and will be paying 50% of the cost of the project if the application is approved.

How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
Castlethorpe has an adult population of just over 800. This project will help to provide additional fitness benefit to all of them and their children. The sports ground is fully available to the whole community.

Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
To dig out a currently grassed area, remove a diseased tree and 2 small hedges. Then to lay a hardcore base to the area and to complete with shingle providing a parking surface that will accommodate nearly twice the number of cars and matching as near as possible the appearance of the current parking area. A local tradesman has given a 'ballpark' estimate of £5,100 to do do the work.

When and why was your project founded?
This project to extend the car park comes from a request by the sports teams at the end of last cricket season and the start of this football season following severe parking problems.
