Describe your project
We are making improvements to our local village hall located in the middle of our isolated rural village. At the moment we have crudely made (by my husband) hardboard inserts that we use to black out the 7 large windows in our central hall for films, school shows, pantomimes, musicals and plays. These are heavy, unwieldy and require 2 people to install them each time. They are held in place with wooden wedges and occasionally fall out during performances! These now need repairing and it makes more sense to replace them with close fitting blackout blinds. In order to make it dark enough we need blackout roller blinds that run in their own side rails.
How will your project benefit your local community?
The main groups that will benefit are our local film club, amateur dramatics group and primary school. The film club has been going for 4 years and attracts around 60 people each month to screenings of films chosen democratically by film club members. These attract mainly older people from neighbouring parishes as well as Holbeton parish. The Holbeton players have been active for many years. They have an ambitious programme of 2 or 3 plays, musicals and pantomimes each year, attracting audiences of 80 to 100 to each of 3 or 4 performances over 3 days. Audiences are of all ages from local parishes. Where at all possible local children take part. Holbeton primary school uses the hall for staging their own productions. Having proper blackout facilities will facilitate the use of the hall for performances during the day, and in the evenings in the summer months. In this way the relatively small investment will help enrich the cultural life of our local communities.
Please give details of any support you have from your local community
We have the support of our parish council as well as our school, film club and Holbeton players.
How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
Holbeton School has around 40 pupils. The 3 main parishes benefiting are Holbeton (600 inhabitants), Yealmpton (1,670 inhabitants) and Newton and Noss Mayo (1,800 inhabitants). We do get some people from further afield.
Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
These BlocOut blinds for all 7 windows will cost £1,076 including VAT. We will install them ourselves.
When and why was your project founded?
Holbeton Village Hall was opened in 1962. It was enlarged in 1999, with the addition of a kitchen, toilets, a meeting room and storage space. The Holbeton Film Club was founded 4 years ago, the village school many years ago.
