Project description

Describe your project
Our Village hall, built in 1880 as a Coffee House and reading room for the benefit of the village, is a beautiful building with gardens in an amazing setting. We have recently redecorated the main hall, toilets, cloakrooms and staircase using income raised from hiring the hall and rooms, and holding quiz nights. Now we need to paint the kitchen and three small meeting rooms, replace main hall curtains to compliment the new neutral paintwork, purchase eighty new chairs as the very old ones are badly stained and beyond refurbishment, and replace the existing very old and unreliable LPG cooker. We are employing a professional painter and decorator so that the work can be fitted in during the times when the hall is not in use and, due to the age of the building, so that it is done to a high standard

How will your project benefit your local community?
The hall is a vital ammenity to our village which has no school, Post Office or shop, and is used daily by many village groups and the wider community: W.I, Buckland History Group, Luncheon Club, Short Mat Bowls, Parish Council, Zumba Class, Martial Arts Class, The Church, Playing Field Committee. Also by hirers for birthday parties, wedding receptions and other family occasions, theatre groups, photographic groups and other outside organisations for meetings and activities. We host an annual Village Day in June with a sit down lunch, a Christmas Fayre with carols around the Christmas tree and an annual quiz night with supper which help to raise much needed funds for vital hall maintenance. Having the whole premises redecorated with new curtains and chairs will make the hall a much nicer place for all to visit and use, and a new gas cooker will make cooking the monthly lunch for up to forty villagers much easier (there is an electric cooker as well but both are needed). The upstairs rooms have not been redecorated for some years, the largest one at least twenty five years ago! Two of them are used as small meeting rooms and the third by our History Group.

Please give details of any support you have from your local community
Most of the villagers use or visit the hall at some time or other, either on a weekly basis or just occasionally. Many of them are on hand to help with small maintenance tasks and all are keen to see this lovely old building and it's grounds kept well maintained and cared for. All functions that are organised by the Committee are well attended and supported by villagers and their families and friends. We have also benefited from anonymous donations.

How big is your community? And how many people will benefit from your project?
Population of village 381. W.I. Membership 25. Luncheon Club attendance 40. History Group Meetings 15-20. Short Mat Bowls 12. Zumba / Martial arts 15-20. Quiz Nights 60-80. Village Day lunch 80. Parties and Wedding receptions -up to 80-(Limit for Fire Regulations), along with hirers of hall and visitors.

Tell us what you intend to spend the money on.
Re-decoration of kitchen and upstairs rooms £1975 Curtain Material £175 - curtains to be made by Committee member. Eighty new chairs £1500 Montpelier MDG Double Oven LPG Cooker £400 (Calor Gas website) Total £4050 - balance to be met by Hall Committee Funds.

When and why was your project founded?
We have recently had the main hall, cloakrooms, toilets and staircase of our hall redecorated (early 2018) and our project is to continue with redecorating the rest of the premises and replace existing old and worn-out chairs and curtains and the old unreliable and LPG cooker.
