Natural Gas vs LPG – Price Increases Explained

Recently the news has been full of headlines about rising gas prices, gas supply challenges, and sadly some energy suppliers going out of business.

Unlike some of the utility companies who provide natural gas to homes and businesses which are connected to the mains grid, Calor supplies Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) to off-grid homes and businesses, meaning we’re fortunately not affected by the same issues relating to gas supply

At Calor, we source our gas from various parts of the UK and abroad, including Teeside and Braefoot Bay, along with the USA, Norway, Russia and the Netherlands. Once received, the gas is transported to our sizeable storage reserves in Immingham and Canvey which can hold a combined 90,000 tonnes of LPG. Our large storage capacity is a significant advantage and means we are able to bulk buy gas to also help protect what our valued customers pay.

Price increase

Despite not being affected by the same issues which many of the mainstream energy suppliers are faced with, our costs have risen considerably in recent months which has unfortunately forced a universal price increase for our customers from November onwards. We fully understand that this isn’t good news, which is why it’s important to reassure you that we have kept this unavoidable increase to an absolute minimum.

Why are prices going up?

Over the past 12 months, we have seen the wholesale cost of LPG double which means that it costs more for us to buy the LPG that we then supply to homes and businesses across the UK. In addition, it’s also becoming more expensive for us to transport the gas due to the increased need to recruit production operatives and recruiting drivers amidst a national driver shortage.

I’m concerned about my bills

We know that things are difficult for many people at the moment, and we want you to know that if you’re struggling with payments or are worried about any upcoming payments,  we’re here if you need us.

If you’re a Domestic Customer, free advice and guidance is also available through the following organisations:

Do I need to do anything, and will my supply be affected?
Importantly, because we supply LPG rather than natural gas, it means that the media coverage relating to the difficulties faced by some on-grid natural gas suppliers does not relate to Calor’s LPG supply.

Nothing will change in terms of how we supply your gas, so you don’t need to do anything. It’s important to note that if you’re an on-demand or cylinder customer, please remember to allow at least 14 days for delivery.

What can I do to lower my energy bills?
We’re all mindful of keeping our household running costs as low as possible and there are a few small things you can do to keep your energy bills as low as possible.

For example, some of us tend to set our thermostats slightly higher than we need them which can waste energy. Turning down your thermostat by just one degree can start to lower the overall costs of your energy by only heating your home to the temperature you need. Similarly, making sure that radiators are off in the rooms you’re not using can make sure you’re only using your heating where you really need it. Knowing when to turn the heating off is equally important. You should never be heated to the point of being uncomfortably hot.

Making sure your house is properly insulated can be another way to keep your heating costs down. In older houses particularly, cold drafts can cause your home to lose heat so using draft excluders or draft-proofing
kits can be a good way to prevent this.
