Project description

Bude Sea Pool is a sea water pool under the cliffs at Summerleaze Beach in Bude. It is a wonderful asset for the town, attracting thousands of visitors and local residents to use the safe sea-water environment every year. It is run by a local Registered Charity, Friends of Bude Sea Pool, which was set in in 2010 after the pool was threatened with demolition by Cornwall Council. The Charity is run by an Executive Committee who oversee the actions of the Operations Committee. It organises year-round fund-raising activities to preserve and maintain this beautiful facility. Its small army of volunteers work tirelessly to keep the pool clean and safe for community and visitor use. The Pool is staffed from spring-time to Autumn by a local team who work with the RNLI Lifeguard service to keep the Pool safe for all users. Swim-safe lessons are held every year in the sea pool by the RNLI and swimming teachers to teach children how to be safe in the sea and what to do in the case of an emergency.
To encourage more children to use the pool and learn to love the sea-water environment we want to purchase water pool fun equipment including floating water play mats, water slides, kayaks and canoes, large zorb balls, and other health and safety approved water play equipment. We also want to purchase wet suits, for families to hire on a daily basis which would encourage more children to take the plunge especially out of season. We want to encourage more use by the local community including families in outlying rural areas, as living by the sea, it is vitally important that children are brought up to feel comfortable and enjoy a sea water environment, whilst at the same time being aware of its dangers.
The play equipment will be stored in the large FoBSP Hub at the water's edge and hired out daily by the Pool staff. Children will be supervised at all times using the equipment and wet suits. No charge will be made for the hire of either play equipment and wet suits but a refundable deposit will be required to ensure safe return of the equipment and wet suits.
