Calor is the UK’s leading
supplier of liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG.
Our fuel is used by hundreds of thousands
of consumers and businesses across the UK.
Our fuel is used to power:
• Domestic central heating and cooking
• Commercial heating and water heating systems
• Catering equipment
• Weed burning, crop desiccation, crop drying and livestock rearing equipment
• Road vehicles – Autogas
• Forklift trucks
• Groundcare equipment and golf cars
• Patio heaters, barbecues and generators
We employ over 1,100 people and operate the UK’s largest LPG delivery fleet.
Across our operation we aim to implement socially and environmentally responsible
business practices. The combination of the benefits of LPG and our activities enable
communities to diversify and to sustain local services and facilities.
We are also externally recognised for the part we play in supporting communities.
Business in the Community has awarded Calor its highly regarded Per Cent Standard
to reflect our consistent contribution of more than one per cent of our pre-tax profit to
support charitable causes and community projects. We are one of only 116 UK
companies that have received this accolade.
As part of the worldwide SHV Group, based in The Netherlands, we combine a wide
perspective with a close understanding of our customers’ businesses and communities.
This understanding – and trust – has been built up over the 70 years we have been in
business and at the heart of our operation is our determination to encourage and
promote sustainability in all that we do.
Our commitment to sustainable development is not
an overnight phenomenon – it is embedded in our
company’s culture and our heritage. From its
foundation in the 1930’s, Calor has provided a
means of affordable heat to rural communities.
As we grew in the 1950’s and 1960’s we
developed a network of small business distributors
to provide a sustainable fuel supply infrastructure.
This was accompanied by the development of improved heating products using LPG,
a notable example being the use of safer LPG-powered mobile heaters in preference
to paraffin heaters. The 1980’s saw a massive investment by Calor in the rural market,
with the growth of LPG domestic central heating systems, offering a choice for the first
time against the traditional and more polluting fuels such as oil and coal.
In short, while we can provide evidence of our ongoing commitment to a sustainable
approach, the concept of sustainability is central to our ethos and our existence over
seven decades.
And, as we face the challenges of global warming, cleaner burning LPG has
a recognised role bridging the transition between traditional fossil fuels and emerging
technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells due to its ultra low emissions of particulates,
carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds as well as its minimal sulphur
dioxide emissions.
