» The importance of pipework inspection and testing
All gas pipework requires periodic testing and this is likely to be your responsibility. CalorForce carry out gas-leak detection, safety inspection and pressure testing to all above or below ground LPG pipework. Additionally, underground polyethylene pipes using modern electro-fusion welded joints are installed where required.
To reduce the risk of accidents as a result of pipework, the UK LPG and the Health and Safety Executive consider that underground metallic service pipework at industrial and commercial premises should be replaced with pipework made from materials not subject to corrosions, such as polyethylene (PE) which won’t corrode.
» Your responsibility
As explained in the HSE leaflet ‘Inspecting and Maintaining or Replacing Metallic Pipework’ which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page, the maintenance of pipework at industrial and commercial premises mostly rests with the site operator, but may fall to the gas supplier in some cases, for example if it has contractual responsibilities or is the owner of the pipe.
Every Calor commercial customer received a letter during 2009 and was requested to complete a questionnaire. Those who returned the questionnaire received a risk rating advising whether they were in the top 10%. If you have not already completed the questionnaire you can do so at http://www.hse.gov.uk/gas/lpg.htm
» Further advice for Calor customers
As a Calor customer we are very keen that you are provided with additional information to help you manage this important issue. We have therefore produced a LPG pipework guide that will give you more advice on the type of underground LPG piping that has been fitted at your site and what your actions you should take.
» Domestic customers
These guidelines only concern commercial and industrial LPG customers. The Health Safety Executive or UK LPG will be producing guidelines for domestic customers in the future. However, Calor has already taken the proactive initiative of replacing high risk metallic underground service pipework at domestic premises and will continue to do so as and when it is identified as such.
