» Seeing the Wood for the Trees
This was the flagship event in our calendar of activity to support our commitment to the Woodland Trust’s MOREwoods scheme. The scheme aims to double native woodland cover in the UK by helping landowners create woods on their own land. Calor is providing £250,000 towards the costs of the project over three years, which includes funding the planting of 50,000 trees throughout the UK.
It was all hands to the deck (or the ground in this case!) as over 300 local people took part in the 2 day event, from the school children, to the WI, to Army Cadets, as well as Stoney staff and their families. Thanks to the efforts of everyone who attended, the area of scrubland on the Stoney Stanton site was transformed on Friday the 25th and Saturday 26 May, as the 2,500 saplings went into the ground.
Tony Ainsworth, Customer Operation Manager at Stoney Stanton, said: “This will be a fantastic asset for the local community and everyone here at Stoney is looking forward to seeing the trees grow and the woodland develop over the coming years.”
According to Woodland Trust statistics, the Leicestershire area only has 3.8 per cent woodland cover compared to a national average of 12 per cent, so this new woodland at the Stoney Stanton COC site is a very welcome addition. Penny Pulfrey from the Woodland Trust added: “Calor’s support of the Woodland Trust is not just financial: it’s also about helping us realise our aspiration of planting 20 million trees a year in the UK – and this new wood is a key part of that.
“The best thing about this new wood is it’s been created by children from the local school, along with Calor staff and their families from the local area, who will be able to use the wood and watch it grow as they get older and eventually have families of their own.”
