One of the world’s leading hotel groups, which has recently spent £80 million to refurbish an entire holiday resort has turned to Calor for its fuel requirements.
The exclusive Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort nestled in the Cairngorm National Park is powering all of its heating, catering and leisure facilities with Calor Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
The off-mains resort, made up of four hotels, 19 luxury highland lodges, a leisure complex, a new 18-hole Championship golf course and conference facilities, is one of Calor’s largest ever commissions. The installation included two underground purpose built 24-tonne capacity LPG storage tanks, two vaporisers for the off-take that feeds the distribution main as well as a road tanker-loading bay. In total, two kilometres of underground pipe work were laid to supply LPG to all facilities.
Senior Engineer Kevin McKeown led the team that drove the installation from design to completion. He said: “When you’re investing at the scale that Macdonald Hotels & Resorts were, you need to make sure you’re working with a supplier that has the experience to see the project through not only technically, but on time, on budget and to specification.”
The installation project, from early conceptual design to final commission, took nine months.
The decision to choose LPG over alternatives oil and electricity was one of flexibility combined with environmental benefits. Kevin said: “The resort required fuel for a diverse range of applications including heating for the pool and sauna, heating and hot water in accommodation, underfloor heating in a shopping complex and gas in the kitchens which supply the restaurants.
“Calor LPG offers a cleaner burning, controllable and cost-effective heat supply in off-mains areas. Electricity is often more expensive for the end user and oil brings with it its own unique challenges regarding storage and possible pollution due to leaks. Totally versatile, Calor LPG allows radiant, warm air or wet system heating, or a combination of all three, to be powered by one fuel source. Calor takes responsibility for the installation, maintenance and safety of its tanks, so our customers don’t have to worry about any of these issues nor about complying with today’s complex oil storage legislation.”
Ruaridh Macdonald, Operations Director for Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort, said: “In a world class resort everything has to run smoothly and efficiently, so utility supplies have an integral part to play in the delivery high quality service and comfort levels. However, in the heart of an area of such natural beauty as the Scottish Highlands, environmental issues are also of paramount concern. We are delighted with the way Calor has gone about its task to meet our very demanding list of requirements and deliver a highly successful project.” - ends -
