Calor Is The Rural Fuel Of Choice At LAMMA

Calor, rural fuel experts and the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), will be exhibiting at the LAMMA show in January, demonstrating the benefits of using LPG within the farming industry.

Calor has a 70-year relationship with the farming community, supplying fuel to power equipment on farms and to bring gas to rural communities who do not have access to a mains supply.

This year’s exhibition will see Calor emphasise how it can provide a cleaner, greener, more cost effective fuel. Offering the complete fuel solution for the UK’s farmers, LPG can be used for crop drying, animal rearing, weedburning, heating and to fuel ATVs or other farming equipment needed to make businesses a success.

A reliable power supply is essential in any business, but Calor understands that for farmers it can make the difference between ending the year with profits or losses if the supply is not constant.

Using Calor LPG with mobile or static dryers ensures consistent, controllable and precise moisture content and optimum drying temperatures are easily maintained. Crops such as wheat, maize, barley, rape, peas, potatoes, bulbs and onions can all be dried economically and efficiently with Calor LPG.

Calor’s Commercial Market Manager, Sabrina Jackson, said the company’s LPG experience and knowledge continues to lead the field: “Our technical expertise, large distribution network and reliability has enabled us to build strong relationships with rural communities, particularly within the farming industry.

“LPG is a cleaner burning fuel and can be used in the most sensitive of areas. It offers a dependable fuel source for agricultural, catering, heating and water heating applications.”

Calor Ensures Wharram & Kay is Not Left High & Dry
With just six weeks available to harvest and dry all the grain produced by Wharram & Kay’s Providence Farm in Yorkshire, a fast, efficient and reliable crop drying solution was vital.

With the facility to store crops on the farm, a system was needed that would enable the crops to be taken through the drying process and be transported to the 1,000 tonne storage area.

Farming equipment dealers Peacock & Binnington suggested a Calor LPG powered Brice Baker Farm Fans Automatic Batch dryer coupled with an elevator and conveyor system to take the grain from the intake area through to storage where it is kept until it is sold months later.

Partner Roger Kay welcomed the suggested solution. He said: “I had seen similar installations working well and speaking to colleagues confirmed that this recommendation would be successful.”

The most important factor in drying the crops is accurate and reliable control of heat making Calor liquefied petroleum gas the ideal solution. LPG offers precise moisture control and even heat ensuring crops are dried evenly and to the exact moisture content.

Providence Farm’s batch dryer can dry 9.5 tonnes of grain, oilseed rape or linseed each cycle and can process 200 tonnes in 24 hours when working at 5 per cent moisture extraction rate.

Calor sales specialist Wayne Marshall oversaw the installation and advised Wharram & Kay on the size and ideal location of the bulk LPG tanks. Commenting on Calor’s unrivalled service he says: “Calor offers the largest LPG delivery network in the country and a comparative rental cost for the tank covers regular maintenance checks, a 24 hour, 365 day emergency call out service and visual inspections every time the tank is refilled giving customers complete peace of mind.”

The grain drying system has been very successful and there are now opportunities for Wharram & Kay to dry crops from other farms in the area increasing the profit potential of the farm.
