‘Fuel For Thought ’ in Non-Mains Gas Areas!

Homebuyers in more rural areas are missing out on the benefits of gas because of misconceptions about supplies into off-gas areas.

So says Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of LPG, whose research reveals that many developers wrongly assume that when they buy land in off-gas areas, the mains gas can simply be extended to meet their needs.

Paul Riding, Commercial Market Controller, for Calor explains: “Sometimes it’s just not feasible and other times prohibitively expensive, but either way it can be a major headache when they find out. Many immediately think that oil is the only option, but rising and fluctuating prices and the tough new regulations on oil storage can make it an even bigger and more expensive problem.

“LPG on the other hand is cleaner burning (less carbon emissions and CO²) and more convenient to use than oil. And it’s quite often the only viable alternative for non-mains gas areas because people relocating from the cities know and trust gas - and even demand it.

“When you consider that as much as 10% of the UK population lives in non-mains gas areas, that’s a lot of people who are potentially being deprived of the a convenient, cost effective and environmentally friendly means of cooking, heating and generating hot water.”

Calor’s research findings coincide with a new and bespoke service for architects whereby sophisticated CAD drawings create a blueprint of the site that depicts the LPG tanks, pipes and equipment required – even the optimum tank siting positions and likely consumption rate.

And this is backed up by a unique and dedicated support team, which aims to meet all the technical needs required when specifying a fuel source for the development.

Paul Riding says: “Quite simply, we offer an unrivalled service because it is a complete technical solution that supports the developer every step of the way and allows their customers to enjoy the benefits of gas in off mains areas.”

On small to medium sized developments (sometimes called metered estates) a central bulk storage LPG tank is utilised and the gas passes through a distribution network to several households, via a metered supply.

Central storage installations are very similar to that of a mains gas distribution network and provide a convenient means of supply.

Additionally, Calor provide technical assistance and expertise at the design and installation phases of the development and even marketing information for sales offices and show homes.

Paul Riding adds: “LPG makes gas central heating systems and cooking facilities a reality in non-mains areas and this can have a positive benefit on house sales. Calor is also a respected brand name that will be familiar to house buyers.

“And because LPG is similar to a natural gas system, billing is based on a personal meter reading as well, while there is no visible fuel storage on the property, a wide selection of gas appliances are available.”

Central storage installations can obviously be sited above ground, but increasingly where suitable ground conditions are available, Calor offers underground installation that is unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing. All that’s visible in an underground installation is the tank cover, which gives access to the tank valve assemblies and the pressure regulator equipment.

Being underground, the minimum distances from buildings and boundaries can be reduced and this often makes siting easier – and once the gas tanks are buried the area can easily be returned to grass or planted with flowers or shallow rooted shrubs.

Calor appoints a Project Manager to each development with significant experience in the management of central storage installations – and they in turn take on a specialist contractor with expertise in gas distribution systems.

And once installation is complete and running, Calor also takes responsibility for totally reliable supplies - via a predictive top up delivery service and its unique telemetry monitoring system.
