Calor, the UK 's leading supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), understands the importance of providing a reliable and regular fuel supply to its rural customers and the recent developments of its The Think Tank ® telemetry system will allow more businesses to take advantage of the effortless automated LPG deliveries.
The original system requires a physical connection to a telephone line in order to communicate to Calor via the dialler unit when a delivery is required. The updated technology works in a similar way but has eliminated the necessity of a landline, allowing more businesses to benefit from this service.
The new technology uses GSM advances operating via the mobile networks. The recent developments mean rural businesses can benefit from automatic LPG deliveries regardless of the distance between their landline telephone connection and the Calor LPG tank.
The original telemetry system has proved exceptionally beneficial for numerous customers with approximately 3,848 of businesses successfully operating the system. The new GSM technology will reach a greater number of customers who, due to barriers such as the location of buildings, have been unable to receive the benefits of The Think Tank ® technology in the past.
The advantages of the new GSM technology means that the tank, transmitter and dialler are all built into one unit whereas the original telemetry system required the transmitter to be fitted to the tank and the dialler unit to be installed next to the landline. This could cause difficulties for businesses that require their tanks to be located some distance from their landline due to the layout of their premises.
The new developments in The Think Tank ® telemetry service, which is part of Calor's continuous research and development programme, will provide new and existing Calor customers with the added reassurance that LPG deliveries are automatically requested as Stuart Craig, Calor's National Telemetry Project Co-ordinator explained:
"It is quite normal for some farms not to have their tanks positioned close to their landline connection. These businesses were originally unable to benefit from The Think Tank ® service. The GSM mobile coverage technology will allow customers such as these to take advantage of the new technology giving them more time to concentrate of the running their business.
"Since the introduction of telemetry technology in 2003 many rural businesses nationwide have benefited from simple and reliable automated Calor LPG deliveries" added Stuart. "Thanks to The Think Tank ® technology, Calor has reduced the number of miles travelled by delivery trucks by almost one million kilometres so there are environmental benefits too."
The new and improved GSM units are starting to be fitted to suitable tanks** by Calor, taking just four minutes to install and customers do not need to request or purchase any additional equipment.

*Calor is committed to minimising the impact of its business on the environment. For example; investment of telemetry technology for managing gas deliveries to bulk tanks has resulted in a reduction of 10% in the vehicle fleet and reduced the number of kilometres travelled by 989,680 kilometres, this equates to almost one thousand tonnes less CO 2 emissions annually. These savings were made against a back drop of increased gas sales.
