Rural pubs could be getting a visit from the 2006 Pub Chef of the Year if they enter and win the Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award.
Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is teaming up with John Rudden, the current Pub Chef of the Year and last year’s Pub and Restaurant Chef of the year as part of its nationwide hunt to find the UK’s best and most sustainable rural pub.
The brand new award is part of the increasingly successful Calor Village of the Year® competition, now in its 10th year. The new award is being run in association with Business in the Community and its Pub is the Hub campaign.
John Rudden joins the pub award category as one of the judges and he will also be offered as part of the prize for pubs. John, who is the co-director of the White Hart at Lydgate near Oldham has metamorphosed his own business from a former country beer stopover to complete all-rounder, offering customers two restaurants, function rooms, bedrooms and a bar that still flags up the notion of a traditional pub atmosphere.
As part of his remit on the Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award, John will visit the winning pub for the day and work alongside staff to deliver a charity event for the benefit of the local community. He will also host a return visit to the highly successful White Hart where he will demonstrate the secret of his own success.
The pub is traditionally at the heart of a village and the importance of encouraging sustainable communities is at the very core of the Calor Village of the Year competition. Calor’s LPG is used in a wide variety of applications in rural areas from catering equipment and heating in pubs and restaurants to a whole host of agricultural uses.
Speaking of his involvement, John said: “I know only too well what an important role village pubs play in the community. I’m delighted to be involved in this competition and I’m looking forward to celebrating the success of my industry.”
Entry is simple – all you need to do is tell us in 500 words why your pub is sustainable - and what’s more you don’t need to enter Calor Village of the Year to be in with a chance. The award is open to all pubs in rural villages with a population of less than 5,000 throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Closing date is 15 July 2006.
