Calor Offers Energy Advice to [Region's] Businesses

Calor, the UK’s leading provider of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) says [region] businesses could be missing out on financial benefits because they are not up to speed with the Carbon Trust’s Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme.

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme enables businesses to claim 100 per cent first year capital allowances on investments in energy saving technology and products.

The Energy Technology List details all the products that are eligible for the scheme. The list for 2006 has warm air and radiant heaters included. Warm air and radiant heaters provide excellent heating capabilities and can be powered by LPG in non-mains gas areas.

Sabrina Jackson, Calor’s commercial market manager, says businesses working in rural areas where mains gas is unavailable can benefit. She said: “Businesses can make tax savings on the purchase of energy-efficient equipment and those spending more than £50,000 a year on energy bills can also apply for an energy survey from the Carbon Trust which will identify where further energy savings can be made.”

Calor offers some simple hints and tips for energy saving which will help the environment and the bottom line:

1. Check your heating thermometer. Heating costs can rise by up to eight per cent for every 1oC of overheating.

2. Make sure you are not heating areas that do not require it such as corridors and stores and ensure you are not overheating other areas.

3. Prevent heat loss by improving insulation and draught control or consider installing double glazing which in the long term could prove more cost effective.

4. Use energy efficient light bulbs throughout your building. They last up to twelve times longer than conventional light bulbs and use a fraction of the energy. And remember to turn of lights when you are the last person to leave the room and make sure lights are turned off in stores, toilets, etc.

5. Ensure all office equipment such as computers and photocopiers are switched off at night and at weekends, or when not in use.

6. Choose a high efficiency condensing boiler which could save you around a third off your heating bills – that’s ten per cent more than a conventional boiler.

7. If you run a factory operation, ensure that equipment is not left to run when not being used.

8. Ensure taps are not left dripping, especially hot taps, and only boil kettles with as much water as you need.

9. If you spend more than £50,000 a year on energy bills, apply for a Carbon Trust energy survey which will highlight where your business could be saving energy and can identify fuel savings of up to 30 per cent. Log on to www.carbontrust.co.uk for more information.

10. Finally, make sure employees are aware of your plans to save energy. Together, as a team, you will save more energy and you can start saving immediately.
