Calor, the UK’s leading LPG supplier, is encouraging natural gas installers to invest in LPG training, which takes just one day. Obtaining the CONGLP1 LPG qualification can open up many opportunities in the growing LPG market, especially for installers based near rural areas.
Around 1.5 million homes in the UK are situated in non-mains-gas areas and are supplied by oil, electricity, solid fuel or increasingly, LPG. Though in recent years oil has been regarded as the main fuel source in non-mains-gas areas, the benefits of LPG are becoming more widely understood and, according to Calor, the market is gathering pace.
Rachel Hodge, Calor’s market development manager, said: “LPG’s versatility – the fuel can be used for space heating, hot water and cooking – is really being recognised, along with the fact that it is the only non-mains-gas fuel which provides a real and controllable flame for cookers and fires – just like mains gas does. Calor LPG customers can also benefit from underground tank storage, automatic fuel top-ups, convenient and hassle free tank maintenance and tank insurance.
“With regulations surrounding oil becoming stricter and the legal responsibility for leaks extending to both the homeowner and potentially the installer, many non-mains-gas households are opting for LPG. The good news for heating engineers wanting to get involved with LPG is that becoming qualified is not as complex as you might first think.
“For the natural gas installer already holding a Domestic Core Natural Gas Safety certificate, obtaining the additional CONGLP1 – LPG qualification is relatively simple. It takes just one day to train and one day for assessment, and the qualification remains valid for five years.
“By taking this route, natural gas installers with appliance qualifications, for example, boilers, water heaters, cookers and fires, will automatically become qualified to install equivalent LPG appliances – widening their opportunities even further. One of the main benefits of LPG over other non-mains gas fuels is its ability to provide a real flame for cookers and fires, so installers will find many opportunities to cross sell and install more appliances. Installers wishing to expand into tank installation and maintenance can then take further short courses, which also include underground pipework and electro-fusion welding.”
Training in LPG is available via training centres throughout the UK and also at suitable on-site locations through SGAS (Specialist Gas Assessment Services), which was set up as a gas safety and training and assessment company in 1996 to meet the training requirements set out by CORGI and the HSE. Calor works closely with SGAS and awarded the organisation with the prestigious ‘Centre of Excellence’ status in 1991. SGAS facilities and its staff have been commended by CITB, CORGI and UKAS.
