Specialist housing developer Richmond Homes has chosen Calor Gas to fuel an estate of eleven luxury homes at its Drums of Pitversie development. Development
Centrally located in the picturesque conservation village of Abernethy, among the Ochil Hills that overlook the lands of the Earn and Tay estuaries, the new development is in a non-mains gas area but Richmond Homes wanted to ensure that the houses remain in line with modern expectations of high-quality rural living. To do so the company wanted LPG to fuel the homes and turned to Calor Gas to supply it.
Calum Stewart, construction director of Richmond Homes, says: “The commercial benefits of Calor LPG over oil presented a strong argument in its own right, but when you consider all the lifestyle benefits we would be able to offer our customers, LPG was the obvious choice.
”Our customers expect certain standards, and LPG provides a more comprehensive list of fuel-related benefits than oil. For example, having a controllable flame for cooking or a ‘living flame’ fire is a necessity for the modern family – and only Calor could provide them.”
Against competition from other major utilities, LPG market leader Calor Gas was successful in winning the contract to supply gas to the eleven homes.
The modern family appreciates and enjoys the advantages of cooking and heating on gas,” explains Christine Hill, marketing and sales Director of Richmond Homes. She continued: “Calor’s flexibility and technological methods complement the style and personality of a Richmond Homes building.
“Their approach to customer service and energy supply also coincides with the philosophy of Richmond Homes. We provide excellence, luxury and practicality for our customers, so we needed an energy supplier that matched those standards.”
Following detailed research and extensive discussions between Richmond Homes and the LPG supplier, Calor’s technical consultants advised that the development would benefit most from a metered communal gas storage facility. Each house would be supplied via underground pipes, and a meter in each home would measure usage. The decision to turn the Abernethy site into a metered estate was also taken to minimise the levels of disruption as well as the ability to reduce costs. Calor engineers were also mindful of the expectations that accompany the purchase of a Richmond Home, and consequently it was felt that a communal gas facility, subtly incorporated into the entrance to the estate, and suitably framed by hedging plants and shrubs, would be the ideal solution.
The Drums of Pitversie Calor Gas tanks will be monitored by the latest telemetry technology to ensure each home always has sufficient energy supplies. Calor has supplied The Think Tank ® intelligent storage system, which enables customers to be automatically topped-up with Calor LPG when required. A new contents gauge fitted to the tank regularly monitors a customer’s gas level. Using a wireless transmitter on the tank it sends a signal to a dialler unit connected to the phone in a customer’s house. This automatically dials up Calor’s central computer keeping it informed of the current gas level.
Being a cleaner and more environmentally-friendly fuel was also a big factor for the housing developer too.
Calor’s market development manager, Rachel Hodge, says: “LPG burns cleaner than oil, producing fewer carbon emissions. Its versatility means that it can be used for heating, cooking and hot water. In this case, the simplicity of a metered estate, which does not require any monitoring from homeowners, also reduces a family’s responsibility for its fuel.”
