Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas – LPG – expressed interest in the launch of Toyota’s new hydrogen fuel cell. The company’s FLT specialist, Jason Whitwell, said that the cleaner burning fuel still had a substantial role to play in the materials handling sector.
‘As we continually innovate and provide solutions, we welcome innovation in other areas. We don’t see hydrogen fuel cells as a threat, but as an additional option for FLT users,’ he said. ‘Hydrogen power is regarded as the holy grail of fuels in other industries, so it is interesting to see such developments.
‘But LPG is an established and growing fuel that still delivers a number of benefits,’ he added. ‘Just as LPG is the most viable bridging fuel in other industries, so its continued future looks assured in the FLT sector.’
Jason Whitwell confirmed that Calor would watch the development of the new technology with interest. ‘We work with all the leading manufacturers to provide a cleaner, flexible fuel option, and innovation is central to our approach as industry leader,’ he said. ‘In recent years we’ve developed fixed fuel tanks, automated telemetry and underground bulk tanks to meet our customers’ needs, and our technical specialists are available to design particular solutions.
‘It is interesting to see the development of new fuel technology, as I don’t feel that there is one single solution – we can all play our part,’ he added. ‘Provided the cost of the technology, particularly the refuelling stations, can be reduced, it could well prove viable. It’s also worth bearing in mind that any zero emission fuel requires electricity generation, which does produce emissions.
‘LPG provides a low emission, convenient fuel with innovative solutions, here and now,’ he added. ‘That said, we welcome the new development and will be watching with interest.’
