A Somerfield convenience forecourt in Evesham has become the latest installation for Autogas Limited, the joint venture company formed by Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of LPG and Shell.
The installation comes on the back of recent good news from the Chancellor who in his March 22 budget provided certainty on LPG fuel duty rates until 2008/2009. The news that LPG forecourt prices should remain at close to half that of petrol and diesel until at least 2009 is excellent news for fleet managers who can now, better than ever, budget for the whole-life costs of their LPG fleets.
The Somerfield installation brings the total number of Autogas Limited refuelling sites to 210. The company launched 15 sites in 2005 and has plans to introduce further sites later this year. In total, the UK now has over 1200 LPG refuelling sites making this an unrivalled network of any alternative fuel.
Autogas Limited’s key account manager, Paul Oxford, said the new site reflects the company’s continuing confidence in the LPG market. “The financial and environmental benefits make LPG the right choice for both the fleet driver and private motorist.
“In London alone, the cost savings are significant. 2005 saw the London congestion charge rise from £5 to £8. Many autogas vehicles qualify for a 100 per cent discount on the charge, so the savings for just one car or light commercial vehicle entering the congestion charge zone can be as much as £2000 per annum. If you’re a fleet manager with 30 vans on your fleet the savings are significantly more.”
In addition to its financial attractions, LPG is also a cleaner burning fuel than petrol, and dramatically cleaner than diesel. Compared with petrol, LPG vehicles emit about 20 per cent less CO2. While LPG emits similar levels of CO2 to diesel, one diesel car is equivalent to 20 LPG cars with regard to nitrogen oxides (NOx), and 120 LPG vehicles in terms of particulates, both of which are major causes of ground-level air pollution.
