Paul Blacklock, marketing manager for the UK’s leading LPG supplier, spells out the case for liquefied petroleum gas as an off-mains energy option.
As an increasing number of installers, contractors and specifiers are aware, LPG combines tried and tested heating technology with technical innovation to meet commercial and domestic customers’ energy needs. Heating professionals embracing LPG’s proven package of efficiency, economy and flexibility are in a prime position to offer the best heating solution to the end user and profit in the process.
It’s easy to see why. LPG is as easy to install as natural gas and provides a full range of options from gas heating, living flame fires and cookers to water heaters and cooling equipment. Its ease of storage has also allowed LPG to diversify its use beyond natural gas – in areas such as Autogas, forklift trucks, barbecues and generators.
LPG has been in the UK since the 1930’s. Throughout that time, millions of homes and businesses have used the cleaner burning fuel to power the ever growing range of appliances using gas in off mains areas.
In the form of propane, LPG is ideal for boilers, gas burning space heaters, catering equipment and absorption cooling equipment. It’s clean, versatile and simple to use, and is suitable for all types of domestic, commercial and industrial installations of all sizes. LPG provides a package that other fuels can’t match – providing power for cooking and industrial processes as well as heating, for example.
It’s a powerful argument. LPG offers considerable economic and environmental advantages over other fuel options. LPG vapour has around 2.5 times the energy of the same volume of natural gas and, based on its low carbon emissions figure, LPG is the only viable fuel choice for space and water heating in buildings after natural gas, to meet Part L of the Building Regulations.
LPG also boasts an impressive safety record. Throughout its decades of use, there has not been one single episode of soil or a water course being contaminated as a result of an LPG leak. That’s worth bearing in mind given the tightening régime of environmental regulations. In contrast to other off mains fuels, LPG bulk storage tanks are rented from the LPG supplier, who remains responsible for maintenance and safety, as well as any associated liability for leakage. This provides complete peace of mind for the end user, particularly as most leading insurance companies don’t necessarily provide cover for fuel leaks or spillage.
Peace of mind is also assured by the provision of a robust delivery network. For example, Calor operates one of Europe’s biggest fuel delivery fleets and uses a predictive top-up system based on a customer’s typical usage to maintain fuel supplies and ensure delivery at the right time. And, as well as its established technology, LPG continually provides new benefits for customers through technical innovation. For example, LPG can now be stored in underground bulk tanks, and a true telemetry system – which monitors fuel levels and electronically communicates data to the supplier – is being rolled out across the country over the next few years.
There’s also been innovation evident in the growing choice of appliances and equipment that run on LPG, with most manufacturers providing LPG models in their product ranges. Whether it’s Ambi-Rad or Reznor supplying radiant, space or blown air equipment, or Andrews or Lochinvar providing efficient water heaters, specifers contractors and installers can be reassured that providing an LPG solution allows the full range of relevant appliances to be available. Most boiler manufacturers provide LPG versions at above 90 per cent efficiency. And of course, no self respecting chef would cook on anything but gas – and again, a key advantage of LPG is the integrated package it allows beyond other off mains fuel options.
Looking beyond the heating industry, LPG powers a vast range of economical and environmentally responsible machinery, from all terrain vehicles to cars and vans, groundcare equipment and fork lift trucks, as well as agricultural equipment such as crop drying and poultry heating equipment. In all these applications, LPG provides clean, controllable power and has saved hundreds of thousands of tonnes of pollutants from being produced.
Just as LPG has allowed diversification and business development in a vast range of applications, so heating professionals can benefit from the opportunities an LPG powered heating package can provide. You’re in a prime position to deliver best advice and the most appropriate solution to your customers, as well as giving them security and peace of mind from a cost and environmental point of view. Training is readily available for CORGI registered installers to acquire the relevant ACS modules and most LPG suppliers offer incentives.
It’s about more than pence per litre. Your customers rely on you to reduce capital costs, running costs and maintenance costs as well as comply with environmental regulations and deliver a robust energy solution. It’s clear that in all these areas, LPG delivers.
