Last Chance to Nominate Your Local

Time is running out for people to nominate their local for the Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award, a nationwide competition to find the UK’s best and most sustainable rural pub.

The brand new award is part of the increasingly successful Calor Village of the Year® competition, now in its 10th year and is being run in association with Business the Community and its Pub is the Hub campaign. The deadline for entries is 15 July 2006.

The award aims to celebrate pubs that have diversified their businesses to offer their local community a wider range of services. Examples include offering Internet facilities, meeting rooms or providing additional retail facilities such as a post office or general stores.

Speaking of the new award, Calor’s commercial market manager, Sabrina Jackson, said: “The pub is traditionally at the heart of a village and the importance of encouraging sustainable communities is at the very core of the Calor Village of the Year® competition.

“Pubs which have found innovative ways in which to serve their local community and help their own business success in the process will be highlighted. We want to showcase best practice and ideas that other rural pubs and licensees can adopt”.

Calor is teaming up with the current Pub Chef of the Year and last year’s Pub and Restaurant Chef of the year, as part of its prize for the award. John Rudden, co-director of the White Hart at Lydgate near Oldham, has metamorphosed his own business from a former country beer stopover to complete all-rounder, offering customers two restaurants, function rooms, bedrooms and a bar that still flags up the notion of a traditional pub atmosphere.

John will visit the winning pub for the day and work alongside staff to deliver a charity event for the benefit of the local community. He will also host a return visit to the highly successful White Hart where he will demonstrate the secret of his own success.

Speaking of his involvement, John said: "I know only too well what an important role village pubs play in the community. I’m delighted to be involved in this competition and I’m looking forward to celebrating the success of my industry."

The winner will also receive a patio heater for its pub garden and a huge amount of free publicity - all geared to helping increase business further.

The award is open to all pubs in rural villages with a population of less than 5,000 throughout England, Wales and Scotland. All you need to do is tell us in 500 words why your local pub is sustainable and why they deserve to be recognised fore the important role they play in your community.

Information about the new award as well as an online entry form can be found at www.lpg-catering.co.uk/rural. Alternatively call 0800 216 659 or email enquiries@calor.co.uk for an entry form to be posted out to you. Closing date is 15 July 2006.

Pub is the Hub

Pub is the Hub encourages social enterprise and diversification projects for pubs where these can deliver commercial viability in supporting rural services which are under threat or have ceased trading.

Launched in 2001 by HRH The Prince of Wales, as President of Business in the Community and its Rural Action team, the scheme looks for innovative ways to ensure rural pubs remain relevant to the needs of local communities so that they can continue to thrive, In some instances, village communities acting as co-operatives have bought their own local pub in order to ensure it is retained as a service centre for the local community. Further information on Pub is the Hub is available from their website at www.pubisthehub.org.uk
