Calor has today announced that it is extending the closing date for entries to its nationwide hunt to find the UK’s most community focused and sustainable pub. The new deadline is 15 July 2006.
The Calor Rural Pub in the Community Award, supported by Business in the Community and its Pub is the Hub campaign, aims to celebrate pubs that have diversified their businesses to offer their local community a wider range of services.
Sabrina Jackson, Calor’s commercial market manager said: “This is the first year we have introduced the award, which is part of the established Calor Village of the Year® competition. The response to the award has been outstanding and we have even received entries from members of the public who believe their local pub deserves recognition for the good work they are doing.
“We have extended the entry deadline because we want to make sure that pubs up and down the country have the chance to tell us how they are making a difference in their local communities.”
Award judges will be looking for pubs that have found innovative ways in which to serve their local community and help their own business success in the process. Examples include offering Internet facilities, meeting rooms for community groups or providing additional retail facilities such as a post office or general stores.
John Rudden, the current Pub Chef of the Year, joins the pub award as one of the judges. John, co-director of the White Hart at Lydgate near Oldham, has metamorphosed his own business from a former country beer stopover to complete all-rounder, offering customers two restaurants, function rooms, bedrooms and a bar that still flags up the notion of a traditional pub atmosphere.
John also forms part of the prize for the award as he will visit the winning pub and work alongside staff to deliver a charity event for the benefit of the local community. He will also host a return visit to the highly successful White Hart, where he will demonstrate the secret of his own success.
To enter the awards, all you need to do is tell us in 500 words why the pub you are nominating is sustainable. You don’t need to enter via the Calor Village of the Year competition, this award is completely stand-alone.
Calor suggests considering the following points when preparing your entry. The points are for guidance and focus only and are not the criteria for judging:
• What measures have you taken to ensure the success of your pub and how does your pub contribute to the life of your community?
• Have you diversified or extended the activities or services of your pub? Include any future plans.
• Have you used technology to make your pub more efficient?
• Have you worked in partnership with other local businesses?
• Does your sourcing policy help local businesses within your community?
Further information about the new award as well as an online entry form can be found at www.lpg-catering.co.uk/rural. Alternatively call 0800 216 659 or email enquiries@calor.co.uk for an entry form to be posted out to you.
The award is open to all pubs in rural villages with a population of less than 5,000 throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Closing date is 15 July 2006.

Pub is the Hub
Pub is the Hub encourages social enterprise and diversification projects for pubs where these can deliver commercial viability in supporting rural services which are under threat or have ceased trading.
Launched in 2001 by HRH The Prince of Wales, as President of Business in the Community and its Rural Action team, the scheme looks for innovative ways to ensure rural pubs remain relevant to the needs of local communities so that they can continue to thrive, In some instances, village communities acting as co-operatives have bought their own local pub in order to ensure it is retained as a service centre for the local community. Further information on Pub is the Hub is available from their website at www.pubisthehub.org.uk
