2011 - Start from the Heart

Here at Calor, we have always been invested not only in taking good care of our customers, but also in creating and maintaining good relationships with the people living and working in the local communities in which we operate.

» Start from the Heart 2011

Up until now, we have proven this commitment to local people through the popular ‘Calor in the Community’ scheme, but from 2011 onwards, ‘Calor in the Community’ is being replaced by ‘Start from the Heart’, a new global initiative being led by Calor’s parent company, SHV.

This new scheme will support local communities through promoting projects with an educational or sustainability based theme, and we are already off to a flying start with the creation of a ‘Calor Wood’ on unused scrubland at our central Stoney Stanton COC.

Start from the Heart 2011

Our Start from the Heart activity here at Calor got off to a great start during the summer months of 2011, with many sites opting to do a litter pick, while others undertook such activities as clearing tow paths, landscaping, and renovating local schools.

Neath

One team of litter pickers worked along the woodland areas and canal, while another team cleaned up two parks in Tonna, and built a dry-stone wall for the local church. Yet another group went to work in a local school, chopping down trees, painting railings, installing benches and building a sand pit, amongst other odd jobs.

Grangemouth

At our Scottish Customer Operations Centre, a huge group of around 25 staff did four days sterling work putting in apparatus at the local Moray School.

Kings Lynn Calor Centre

The team from Kings Lynn went litter picking in nearby Reffley Wood. They braved the element and collected a huge amount of rubbish despite the constant rain!

Sales and Marketing

The Marketing team got stuck in at Packwood House, near Lapworth, in Warwickshire, where they laid woodchip to help preserve a woodland path. They also laid some shingle in another area of the grounds to improve vehicle access.

Coryton

A large group took part in a litter pick over three days with The Essex Wildlife Trust at Langdon Hills Country Park.

Human Resources

The HR Department chose Ryton Pools Country Park for their litter picking event, and split into two groups to maximise their efforts. The teams both collected a good deal of rubbish, and this made a real difference to the nature reserve, which is owned by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

Strategy and Corporate Affairs

The small team of seven spent a full day litter picking at Piles Coppice, a lovely piece of woodland just off the A45 in Warwickshire (which is now even lovelier!)

Saxham

Our Suffolk based team helped to renovate the Honnington School pond and nature area, assisted by some of the students – well done to Saxham for managing to hit both of Sustainability and Educational targets in one fell swoop!

Finance and IT

The team undertook a large renovations project at Myton School in Warwick, which took almost a full week to complete. Four groups undertook work such as painting corridors, touching up the school gates, and clearing a garden of stones (and frogs!) for the pupils to start growing their own organic vegetables.
