» Baxi Ecogen LPG stirling engine CHP unit
Calor and Baxi have joined forces to launch a new combined heat and power (CHP) unit to rural homes in 2010. CHP is the process of generating both electrical power and useful heat from a single source. The Baxi Ecogen unit is more than 90% energy efficient, generating electricity for use in the home, while also meeting all domestic heating and hot water needs.
Key benefits of the Baxi Ecogen unit:
- More than 90% energy efficient, significantly reducing carbon emissions and generating electricity locally
- Cuts fuel bills by off-setting electrical consumption
- Potential to earn revenue by selling unused electricity back to the national grid
- Looks and works just like a regular gas boiler
- Virtually noise and vibration free
» LPG Fuel Cell Boiler
Calor and Ceres Power have been working together to develop a new LPG fuel cell boiler using a revolutionary new fuel cell technology. This product will be available for rural homes from 2012 onwards. One single domestic appliance will be able to simultaneously generate heat and electricity as well as cutting annual household carbon emissions.
Key benefits of the LPG Fuel Cell Boiler unit:
- It generates most of the power and all of the hot water and heating needed by a typical UK home
- Greatly reduces need to buy electricity from the mains grid
- Potential to earn revenue by selling unused electricity back to the national grid
- Can reduce household CO2 emissions by up to 50% a year

» Baxi Dachs commercial CHP unit
This commercial CHP system is an on-site, stand alone engine/power plant producing both electricity and heat. It works like a mini power station, except unlike a normal power station, the heat by-product from electricity generation is not wasted. The heat from the engine is used for central heating and hot water supply, making the system extremely efficient. Producing electricity on site also means that transmission losses are kept to a minimum. This is because the distance that the electricity has to travel is very small.
It’s suitable for hotels, sports centres, care homes, leisure parks, community centres and apartment buildings.
Key benefits of the commercial CHP unit:
- Can save on carbon emissions and utility bills by more than 30%
- Low running costs, up to 92% efficient
- Very quiet and ultra reliable
- Intelligent control panel ensures hot water is ready when you need it
- Meets BREE AM/LED /SAP/SBEM requirements and also qualifies as “Good Quality CHP” and meets the Carbon Trust interest free loan requirements
Laura Luty, Calor's bulk market manager, said: “Calor has been delivering solutions for off-mains gas areas nationwide for 75 years. We are continually investing in new technology to provide sustainable heating solutions to ensure we play a pivotal role in the eco-centric homes of the future.”
The Baxi Dachs commercial CHP unit is available to buy now – more than 22,000 are already installed making it the biggest selling CHP in Europe. The Baxi Ecogen LPG Combined Heat and Power unit will be available this year and the LPG Fuel Cell Boiler will be available from 2012 for non-mains gas homes in Great Britain.
